Today in literary history: Henry David Thoreau publishes Walden in 1854.
Even outside the literary scholar community, Walden has a cult-like following. The general consensus is that readers either love it or hate it, with both sides of the spectrum arguing passionately.
If you haven’t read it, yet feel the need to join the literary battle, I found a free annotated version: Walden, an annotated addition.
I also found an interesting feature article from “Humanities” magazine released by the National Endowment for the Humanities: “Not Exactly a Hermit: Henry David Thoreau”.
